Вступ
Міністерство юстиції Сполучених Штатів (англ. United States Department of Justice, Justice Department) - департамент федерального уряду США, призначений для забезпечення виконання законів і здійснення правосуддя. Еквівалент міністерств внутрішніх справ і юстиції в інших країнах. Очолюється Генеральним прокурором США.
1. Історія
Спочатку в США не було центрального юридичного відомства. Генеральний прокурор працював один, у нього не було підпорядкованої йому бюрократичної структури. У 1867 році юридична комісія Конгресу США, очолювана Вільямом Лоуренсом, прийшла до висновку про необхідність створення «департаменту юстиції». 19 лютого 1868 року в Конгрес був внесений відповідний законопроект, проте не був прийнятий. У лютому 1870 року Томасом Дженкесом був представлений інший законопроект, який був прийнятий Палатою представників і Сенатом. У 1872 році новому відомству було передано управління в'язницями, а з плином часу його функції істотно зросли і розширилися.
